Fuel Polishing or Tank Cleaning:
Which Do You Need?
Fuel polishing cleans the fuel. Tank cleaning cleans the tank. Polish when a fuel test shows water or particles and the tank floor is fairly clean. Clean the tank when there is sludge or biofilm, or the fuel keeps failing after polishing. Often the answer is both: clean the tank, then polish the fuel.
| Fuel polishing | Tank cleaning | |
|---|---|---|
| What it cleans | The fuel | The tank’s walls and floor |
| How | Fuel is circulated through filters and water separators | Sludge, biofilm and sediment are loosened and vacuumed out |
| Removes sludge stuck to the tank | No | Yes |
| Typical trigger | A fuel test shows water or particles | A sludge layer, biofilm, or the fuel fails again after polishing |
Do both when the tank needs cleaning. We clean the tank first, then polish the fuel that goes back in, so clean fuel never goes into a dirty tank.
Not sure? Start with a fuel sample. It shows whether the problem is in the fuel, on the tank floor, or both. Fuel testing
Keep your tanks clean. Keep your power ready. Fuel contamination is a leading cause of generator failure — and often goes undetected. Our certified cleaning and polishing services restore fuel quality, remove sludge and microbial growth, and protect your systems from avoidable downtime.
Why Common Solutions Fall Short
Fuel Filters
Clog quickly and do nothing to address underlying tank contamination.
Chemical Additives
Disperse water instead of removing it — creating more sites for microbial growth.
Automatic Polishers
Lack the power and pressure to clean tank walls or remove embedded sediment.
What We Do
High-Pressure Cleaning + Multi-Stage Filtration
Removes sludge, water, and microbial contamination
Cleans tanks down to the internal surfaces — not just the fuel
Multi-pass filtration down to 1 micron
Restores fuel clarity and quality
Same-day alerts and full documentation within 2 business days

Our Process
Professional Fuel Polishing, Done Right
Step 1: Site Evaluation & Setup
Coordination with your facility team, access planning, and emergency protocols
Step 2: Pre-Clean Testing
Fuel sampling and visual assessment
Step 3: Fuel Polishing & Filtration
High-pressure, multi-stage filtration and sediment removal
Step 4: Tank Surface Cleaning
Turbulent agitation and vacuum removal to clean internal tank surfaces
Step 5: Water Separation & Disposal
Dedicated water removal system targets free and suspended moisture. We take the water and sludge away and dispose of it under federal, state and local rules. How we handle fuel waste
Step 6: Before/After Documentation
Photo evidence and written service summary delivered within 2 business days. We pull a fuel sample after every tank service, so you have a record of the fuel’s condition when we finish. You decide whether it goes to a lab for testing.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between fuel polishing and tank cleaning?
Polishing circulates the fuel through filters and water separators to clean the fuel. Tank cleaning removes the sludge, biofilm and sediment stuck to the tank’s walls and floor.
When is fuel polishing enough?
When a fuel test shows water or particles, but the tank floor has little sludge and the fuel is not badly degraded.
When do I need tank cleaning?
When there is a sludge layer or biofilm, when the fuel fails again soon after polishing, before switching fuel types, or when the tank needs an internal inspection.
How often should a tank be polished or cleaned?
As your fuel test results show. Many critical sites polish once a year and clean standby tanks every 3 to 5 years. That is industry practice; no code sets either interval.
Does FuelCare work outside the West?
Yes. We serve facilities across the United States: our own crews in the West, and a managed partner network east of the Rockies, with our own technicians flown in when a project needs them.
